Originally used to confuse and mislead rather than to conceal, dazzle paintings were primarily seen on naval ships during WWI and and consisted of loud, contrasting patterns.
Teams of artists were artists were hired by the UK government to paint dazzle camouflage on over 2,000 ships during WWI which worked to obstruct the size of the ship, make its distance from the enemy unclear, and cloud evidence of its speed.
